About Us
Rooted in faith. Growing together. Come and see what God is doing on this hilltop.
History & Purpose
Founded by German immigrants in 1745, St. John’s Lutheran Church is one of the oldest congregations in the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). For nearly three centuries, people have gathered here to worship, learn, and serve, first in a simple meetinghouse and now within a 300-acre campus of faith and welcome. Learn more about our 280-year story.
We stand in a living tradition that now includes 184 congregations and 45,000 Lutherans across North Carolina, part of a global communion of more than 78 million believers through the Lutheran World Federation. Our story continues every Sunday at 10 a.m. and you’re invited to be part of it.
Mission & Values
Our mission is simple: to share God’s love through revitalization, community, and outreach. We believe faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace—one that sets us free for joyful service and generous love.
At St. John’s, faith isn’t something we keep to ourselves; it’s something we live. We listen to Scripture, honor our Lutheran heritage, and look for the ways God is still active in the world around us. Our values—grace, openness, service, and hope—guide everything from worship to preschool to heritage preservation.
Faith & Communion
We share in the faith expressed in the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds, as well as the confessional writings gathered in the Book of Concord. Our membership in the ELCA connects us to millions of Lutherans around the world who together proclaim Christ’s love through word and service.
All are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Communion is offered each Sunday; wine is on the outer ring of each tray and grape juice in the center. Children are welcome to receive a blessing. If you have questions about baptism or communion, Pastor Matt is always glad to talk.
